Q. Who runs for the Board positions? Am I ready for this?
Our Association is formed for the members. It is about the members. Members with skill sets that can lead, influence and share are encouraged to participate in the election process to lead and move the organization forward. If you possess a great deal of experience and knowledge in certain area, and are keen to connect with and relate to members in the Association to make a difference, perhaps you are suitable for something that you didn’t realize you can be capable of. Why not give it a try?  

 

Q. What type of time commitment is involved in serving on the Executive Board? 
The time commitment varies based on the role, but the International ACAC Executive Board is very much a working board, meaning there are time commitments beyond the board meetings. While an hourly number per week may not be possible as it will vary depending on the time of year, it is realistic to assume extra emails, conference calls, and meetings will be added to your workday and personal time. Additionally, Board Members attend the both the Summer Conference and the National NACAC Conference in late September - about a week's time each. (Refer to the committee descriptions for details on the work and the Association's Policies and Procedures for time commitment of each.)  However, the rewards professionally are fantastic and well worth the extra time and work. 

 

Q. Do you need to have International ACAC experience?  What type of skills are best?
The Executive Board positions require a serious level of commitment to the Association. In an election, one way to demonstrate that commitment is to provide evidence of previous experience contributing to International ACAC.  This can include serving on a committee, speaking on a Webinar Wednesday, writing a blog post, or even just regularly contributing to the Facebook Group. However, we want new voices and encourage anyone who has relevant professional experience to apply.  If you have worked for another volunteer association, or have skills that are directly relevant - then considering applying for a position!

 

Q. Why is “commitment to diversity equity inclusion and justice” included in the skills for President-Elect? 
International ACAC’s mission includes a Statement on Diversity and the organization has pledged to review bylaws, policies , practices and communications to better address the concerns and needs of our growing and increasingly diverse membership. The President-Elect is a key person in overseeing current DEIJ activities and will lead setting future goals and plans when becoming President. The President-Elect and President take leadership roles in DEIJ discussions and will manage implementing any changes resulting from our current DEIJ initiatives. It is not a requirement to have participated in International ACAC DEIJ activities, but it will be important to describe your commitment to these issues with any examples from your professional or personal experience. Refer to the DEIJ Initiatives website for details on recent activities. 

 

Q. Why is there sometimes only one candidate? Does the GNC build a slate? 
Ideally, each position will have several eligible members submit complete applications.  Historically, there have been years where only a small number of members have submitted applications - in these years, some VP positions may have only two or three - or even single - individuals available to elect.  When there is only one person, that is often referred to as single slate. Other years there may be so many viable applications, that it will be difficult for a typical member to distinguish between each, and make an informed decision.  In these cases, it is the Governance and Nominating Committee’s responsibility to narrow the large number of applicants to a manageable number. In all cases, the intention is to present as many eligible applicants as possible, in a manner that ensures members will be able to participate in the election and make an informed voting choice. 

 

Q. What does it mean to be “eligible to be a member of NACAC”?  
NACAC stands for National Association for College Admission Counseling.  It is International ACAC’s larger associated affiliate organization. As an affiliated association, we must follow certain rules set out by NACAC, including our board members and delegates must be eligible for NACAC Membership.  Essentially, if you are working for an educational institution or non-profit organization, chances are you will be eligible for NACAC membership. And if your institution wouldn’t otherwise financially support your NACAC membership - don’t let this stop you from running for an International ACAC board position. As a reminder, International ACAC will not deny a member access to a board position because of financial barriers.  

 

Q.  I'm ready to apply for an Executive Board position. What is a complete application?
A complete application includes the following information:

  • Application - completion of all background and experience questions
  • CV/Resume
  • Institutional Support Form
  • Letter of Recommendation from a professional colleague

An application will only be considered complete when all information listed above is received.
The deadline is February 8, 2023 for all required documentation to be submitted.
